In fact, the IMACS math enrichment program is designed to teach advanced logical reasoning skills to gifted children and those with untapped academic potential. Computer Programming Enrichment and University Level courses in math and computer science are no different. Bright middle and high school students are often quickly bored with the traditional school curriculum, as it’s often made up of memorization of facts or preparing students to solve specific problems that will appear on future tests (with a LOT of repetition). The IMACS curriculum teaches students how to THINK critically and analytically, which can be applied across all areas of study.

In many traditional educational settings, math is presented linearly as a collection of rules that need to be memorized. In contrast, IMACS teaches its students how to use math as a gateway to critical thinking. So, instead of memorizing facts and problem-solving algorithms, IMACS students learn to find solutions by thinking analytically and creatively within the context of narrative games, stories, and puzzles. The curriculum also presents foundational concepts from a high-level STEM education in unique, intuitive ways. Students learn about these concepts much more abstractly in IMACS than in the more concrete terms they’re usually presented in other contexts, which provides a deeper understanding AND fosters a love and excitement, not only for STEM fields in particular, but for learning and critical thinking more broadly.
